2019 Holiday Party and Toy Drive

With your support, we provided toys and gifts to over 200 children and family members facing cancer or another life-threatening illness this holiday season!

We hosted our families at the Lakewood Elks Lodge for a day of holiday cheer, featuring a delicious lunch, holiday music, and a visit from the man himself- Santa! In addition to the hundreds of available toys for the kids to choose from, each family was given 5 raffle tickets and a chance to win some BIG prizes, including a Playstation, a drone, 2 Kindles, a snowboard and MORE!

Families who were not able to attend the party received gifts from their wishlists in the mail just in time for Christmas.

Young adult rocky mountain adventure

This February, we hosted a group of incredible young adult pediatric cancer survivors at the 4th Annual Young Adult Rocky Mountain Adventure!

At Shining Stars, we noticed a need for programming targeted toward pediatric cancer survivors age 18+. After spending much time and research determining exactly what this demographic needs and wants, we came up with the Young Adult Rocky Mountain Adventure and the Shining Stars Mentorship Program.

At this one-of-a-kind program, participants hit the slopes at Winter Park Resort during the day with expert ski/snowboard/ski bike instruction from volunteers and NSCD staff. At night, participants engaged in therapeutic programming including yoga/tai-chi lessons from Mara Pacyga at Elevate Pilates, goal formation workshops with Kevin Moore from the Shining Stars Mentorship Program and so much more.

After attending this program, participants are invited to the Mentorship Retreat in the Fall, where we’ll learn more about their personal and professional goals in order to match them up with the perfect mentor.

Instructor Skill Validation Clinics

We are in full preparation mode for the 2019 Aspen Winter Games!

We have hosted two instructor skill validation clinics at Winter Park this year to ensure our instructors are armed with the most up to date adaptive and teaching techniques.

Special thanks to Charley Phelan, Marty Roberts and all who participated and volunteered to help teach!

Outreach programs

Since our last newsletter, Shining Stars families have enjoyed attending Tales en Pointe, Honky Tonk Angels and Granny Dances to a Holiday Drum, thanks to our partnership with ArtReach.

Thanks to our partnership with Kroenke Sports, we also hosted families at Denver Nuggets basketball games and  Colorado Avalanche games throughout the season!
